According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), health equity is when all people have “the opportunity to ‘attain their full health potential’ and [when] no one is ‘disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of their social position or other socially determined circumstance.'”

Thomas R. Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), says that collaboration between the CDC, HHS, the Office of Minority Health (OMH), and other organizations can reduce health disparities among populations that “experience a disproportionate burden of disease, disability, injury and death.”

April is National Minority Health Month, an initiative by the Office of Minority Health’s initiative to reduce health disparities and educate communities. The theme for National Minority Health Month 2014 is “Prevention is Power.” Check out this Infographic to learn more about health issues facing the minority community, and important initiatives to defeat disparities.
